Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck insists Frank Lampard has enjoyed a ‘very successful’ first season as Blues manager and says it is an ‘exciting time’ for the Premier League club.

Lampard returned to his former club last summer following Maurizio Sarri’s sacking, having impressed in his first managerial job at Championship outfit Derby County.

Under Lampard, Chelsea finished fourth in the Premier League this season, reached the FA Cup final and the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Buck has praised Lampard for securing Champions League qualification despite the club’s transfer ban and says the future is bright for Chelsea.

‘In the round we think it was a very successful season,’ Blues chairman Buck said.

‘I think obviously we would have been a little bit happier if we had won the FA Cup.

‘But I’m sure the manager and the players were gutted not to lift the trophy.

‘Frank Lampard is a very positive force for Chelsea. He’s Chelsea through and through and that continues to show through.

‘He carries a lot of credibility. It’s an exciting time for Chelsea.’

Lampard has been keen to bolster his squad at Stamford Bridge following the club’s transfer ban and has signed Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner as his first and second Chelsea signings.

Asked whether he expected more arrivals at the club this summer, Lampard said this week: ‘We’ll look at that, because that’s our job, we’re very joined up on that already.

‘From having a transfer ban (last summer) you feel we’ve missed where other clubs have spent and improved, and recruitment is a huge part of this game.

‘Nights like this in a footballing sense, show me a lot, tell me a lot.

‘So it’s a conversation now, the season is ended, it’s a very quick turnaround, so now is the time to see where we can improve, what areas we can improve on.’
