Charlie Patino’s former coach insists he wasn’t surprised to see the Arsenal sensation make such a dramatic impact on his senior debut against Sunderland in midweek.

The fanfare surrounding the 18-year-old has intensified in recent months following a series of eye-catching displays for the clubs Under-23 side, while former Gunners prodigy Jack Wilshere has also given the youngster rave reviews.

Mikel Arteta is conscious of the need to protect the latest talent to roll off the Hale End academy production line, but he will find it hard to keep a lid on the hype if Patino keeps progressing at the rate he is currently going at.

Patino made his eagerly-anticipated debut on Tuesday, coming on as a late substitute in the Carabao Cup, and capped a five-star team performance with a goal in injury-time.

Known more for his composure on the ball than his eye for goal, his former coach, George Dukes, told ESPN FC the elegant midfielder bears more than a passing resemblence to Liverpool’s Thiago Alcantara.

He said: ‘The first time I saw Charlie and he came over I knew he was going to have some talent. But the thing that comes to mind with Charlie would be one word and that’s calm.

‘He’s so relaxed on the ball. When he’s just doing kick-ups, touch work, everything is just so relaxed and calm.

‘That’s the word I’d use 100% for Charlie and people will see that the more he plays. You’ll see how relaxed he is on the ball, you won’t see him panicking or anything like that.

‘One player I’d compare him to when I speak to people is Thiago at Liverpool. When he receives the ball it’s really unique and I think Charlie’s got some of that in his game in terms of his calmness and all-round game.’
