All four charges against the golf world number one Scottie Scheffler, including assaulting a police officer, have been dropped.
Scheffler was arrested outside the Valhalla Golf Club in May on the morning of the second round of the PGA Championship as he tried to make his way to the venue.
There had been a heavy police presence in the area outside the iconic golf course in Louisville, Kentucky, following a road accident where a man was struck by a bus and killed.
It’s alleged the American attempted to manoeuvre around the scene and was detained after being ordered to stop and exit his vehicle.
After being handcuffed and taken away by police in surreal scenes, he was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.
The 27-year-old was subsequently released and returned to Valhalla that morning just in time for his tee off.
He later said that he was ‘rattled’ by the incident and that the whole matter had been a ‘big misunderstanding’.
During a court hearing on Wednesday on the matter, Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell said that prosecutors could not move forward with the case.
‘Based upon the totality of the evidence, my office can not move forward in the prosecution of the charges filed against Mr Scheffler,’ O’Connell said.
‘Mr. Scheffler’s characterisation that this was a “big misunderstanding” is corroborated by the evidence.
‘The evidence we reviewed supports the conclusion that Detective [Brian] Gillis was concerned for public safety at the scene when he initiated contact with Mr Scheffler.
‘However, Mr Scheffler’s actions and the evidence surrounding their exchange during this misunderstanding do not satisfy the elements of any criminal offences.’
Scheffler was not in the courtroom, nor was he required to be.
His attorney, Steve Romines, was asked if he wanted to comment but bluntly rebutted: ‘Judge, it’s taken me a long time to understand that when I’m winning, don’t talk. So I have nothing to say, your honor.’
