The increasing state of lawlessness in Abuja was again observed around noon on Monday as some youths laid siege on the airport road.

The motorcycle (Okada) operators, mostly of Northern extraction, attacked Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) for seizing their bikes.

The mob carried sticks and burned tyres as they stoned commuters and vehicles passing the expressway in Lugbe.

The road links several communities and is used to connect the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

An eyewitness told Newspot that dozens of riders caused chaos, threatened, and hurled insults at motorists.

“Thank God for my life. Along Lugbe road, there was a heaving protest going on, throwing of stones and burning of tyres by Northern youths.

“We managed to scale through. They gathered on the side of the road that leads to town, not far to the Glory Dome of Dunamis Church”, he hinted.

The source added that many scampered for safety while a number of vehicles made u-turns and drove against traffic.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command confirmed the incident in a chat with Newspot.

Public Relations Officers, DSP Josephine Adeh said the operators were protesting the seizure of their motorcycles by VIOs.

“The started protest as VIO officers carried out an enforcement. Police teams have been sent to the location to maintain law and order”, Adeh added.

A similar riot happened in May after the Dei-Dei bloody clash between commercial motorcyclists and traders.

Youth gangs have been terrorizing the nation’s capital, causing deaths and severe injuries.

They include ‘Bola Boys’, a large clique of mostly homeless and violent youths who destroy private and public properties like cars, generators, building materials, iron barricades, drainage covers, plastic drums, etc.
