Eyewitness accounts describe a harrowing scene as the ceiling of Justice Okpe’s courtroom suddenly collapsed without warning. Court staff and litigants scrambled to get to safety as debris rained down, narrowly missing the presiding judge.
“It was complete chaos. One minute we were in the middle of a hearing, the next the ceiling was caving in. Everyone started running and screaming,” said a lawyer present at the time.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the structural failure, which has raised concerns about the state of the aging court building. Justice Okpe was reported to be shaken but unharmed in the incident. Repairs are now underway to make the courtroom safe for proceedings to resume.
