Canadians cancel summer trips to America amid Trump’s threats on annexation, tariffs

Canadians are not keen to travel to the US this summer for their vacations.

Most of them are furious over US President Donald Trump’s threats of annexation and tariffs.

America has always been the top destination for Canadian tourists. Last year, the US Travel Association recorded 20.4 million visits.

These trips generated around US$20.5 billion in revenue for the American economy and supported 140,000 jobs.

But that number is expected to drop drastically this year as Canadians — the targets of relentless attacks by an America First president who is intent on wielding tariffs as a policy tool and frequently speaks of turning their country into the 51st state — cancel their travel plans.

A recent Abacus Data survey noted that 56 percent of Canadians have changed or cancelled their travel plans to the United States.

Bookings to American destinations in February alone fell 40 percent compared to the same month last year, while 20 percent of pre-existing reservations were cancelled, according to the travel agency Flight Centre Canada.
