Arsenal star Bukayo Saka shoved injured Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal during a heated half-time altercation at the Bernabeu.

The Gunners kept Real Madrid at bay during the opening 45 minutes of Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg.

European champions Madrid had been talking up a miraculous comeback almost from the moment they went down to a shock 3-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium last week.

But Arsenal’s defence held firm during a goalless but eventful first half as Mikel Arteta’s side edged closer to a Champions League semi-final.

In fact, it was Arsenal who should have had the lead at half-time after the visitors were awarded a penalty, Raul Asencio penalised following a VAR check for dragging down Mikel Merino off the ball.

Saka stepped up for the Gunners but a dismal attempt at a panenka-style penalty was beaten away by Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Real Madrid were awarded a penalty of their own shortly after but VAR once again intervened and recommended the referee to reverse his decision after he penalised Declan Rice for minimal contact on Kylian Mbappe.

Madrid’s frustrations appeared to be getting the better of them towards the end of the half and the tension spilled over to the half-time interval.
