Bryan Robson has named two Manchester United stars in his World Cup XI after Argentina were crowned 2022 champions in Qatar.
United legend Robson picked 11 players across six different countries after an action-packed tournament.
Only four players in Robson’s XI play in the Premier League with England duo Kyle Walker and Harry Kane – who play for Manchester City and Tottenham – among the names included.
Champions Argentina had just one player in Robson’s XI with the former United midfielder opting to pick Lionel Messi after a heroic campaign in Qatar.
Runners-up France had four players with Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Theo Hernandez all picked.
Robson also named two players from Croatia and one player from Morocco after both nations made a surprise run to the semi-finals with Dominik Livakovic and Josko Gvardiol as well as Sofyan Amrabat getting the nod.
The 65-year-old picked two current United players with French defender Raphael Varane included along with Brazilian midfielder Casemiro.
‘I’ll probably get accused of Manchester United bias, but Varane has been a huge influence on France’s defence all the way through and held them together with his composure and anticipation,’ Robson told the Daily Mail.
‘At times, those around him, such as Dayot Upamecano, have looked rash and prone to lunging in yet Varane covered well and got them out of trouble. He was terrific en route to the final.
‘[Casemiro] oozes calmness in the centre of the park and is an excellent passer of the ball.
‘If you look, he plays a subtle role in a lot of Brazil’s best build-up play and he scored a cracking goal against Switzerland when his country truly needed him.
‘Always steps up, is never afraid of taking responsibility and, fittingly, scored his penalty in the quarter-final against Croatia.
‘There was a case for Declan Rice forcing himself in here too but I felt he could have done more against France in the quarter-final.’
