Bruno Fernandes is the boss at Manchester United again after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure, believes former Old Trafford hero Patrice Evra.
Fernandes was in the starting line-up as the Red Devils comfortably beat Nottingham Forest 3-0 on Tuesday night, on their return to Premier League action after the World Cup.
The Portuguese star could not add to his two Premier League goals so far this season but was in fine form and Evra believes he was clearly taking the bull by the horns more than he had been previously.
‘Bruno Fernandes has to be the main man and you can feel it now Ronaldo is not here anymore and you can feel that he is the boss again,’ Evra said on Amazon Prime Video.
‘He is the one taking the free-kicks, the one taking the corner kicks and I am sorry, that is what Bruno Fernandes needs.’
Evra’s thinking was backed up by another former Manchester United man, with Tim Howard saying Ronaldo’s arrival at Old Trafford reduced Fernandes’ leadership role.
‘Before Ronaldo came he was the leader, he was scoring goals, he was all over the referee. He was loud,’ Howard said on NBC Sports.
Fernandes himself sounds more content since the departure of Ronaldo, backing the club’s decision to get rid of the veteran superstar.
Speaking to NBC Sports after the win over Forest, he said: ‘I think you enjoy it when you win games. So if you are winning, everyone will be more happy. You know the strikers want to get their goals and their assists, that kind of thing, it’s always important for everyone.
‘But I think the main thing for us – because we’ve been through difficult moments with changing of coaches and everything – so we find now probably a coach that gave us stability.
‘That is really important and something that was missing, and also big discipline. That was something that, for me, was massive on our team that we need – I think in every team, probably.
‘But I think in our team we were missing a little bit of that, but now everyone understands that you do whatever you have to do or you are out.’
