Bruno Fernandes said he was impressed by Manchester United’s character and composure after the side’s 4-2 victory over Leeds and picked out Anthony Elanga, Fred and Scott McTominay for special praise.

United had looked to be on course for a comfortable win as Harry Maguire and Fernandes found the net with a pair of close-range headers towards the end of the first half at Elland Road.

But the match was all square again as after Rodrigo and Raphinha scored in quick succession shortly after the break and the Red Devils had to dig deep to secure all three points away to their bitter rivals.

Second-half substitute Fred beat Illan Meslier at his near post with an emphatic 70th-minute strike before Elanga – brought on for Jesse Lingard – put the visitors out of sight at the death, his second goal in six Premier League games.

Fourth-placed United now sit four points above West Ham in the table, while Leeds missed out on the chance to leapfrog Brentford and remain just five points above the relegation zone in 15th.

‘We kept on doing the right things, making the right decisions,’ United attacking midfielder Fernandes said.

‘You have to keep doing the right things and taking the right decisions, even if you go down.

‘Great atmosphere, amazing support from our fans and it was a great result for us.’

Fernandes suggested Fred was one of United’s unsung heroes after the Brazilian came off the bench to score his third goal of the season in the 70th minute.

The Portuguese was also keen to applaud McTominay and Elanga for their important contributions in West Yorkshire.

‘Fred is a player that works very hard and doesn’t get a lot of praise,’ he added.

‘Him and Scott are two players who are really important for us in many games.

‘I’m really happy for him and also for Anthony, who got his goal. He’s a kid that deserves that.’

On United’s away support, Fernandes went on: ‘They are amazing. We are really thankful for all the support; the way they push us, and they believe in us.

‘Just keep doing that and we will try and keep doing our job.’
