Bruno Fernandes has played down talk of a rift with Cristiano Ronaldo, his Manchester United and Portugal team-mate.
Ronaldo appears to have played his final game for United after he hit out at Erik ten Hag and the club’s owners in an explosive interview this week.
The 37-year-old is now with the Portugal team as they prepare for their World Cup campaign, which begins against Ghana on November 24.
After meeting up with Ronaldo for the first time since his comments, Fernandes looked less than impressed as he shared a tense handshake at the team’s base.
However, team-mate Joao Mario claimed Ronaldo had jokingly asked Fernandes whether he had travelled to the camp by boat, as the United midfielder was one of the last players to arrive in the dressing room.
‘I was in the locker room at that moment, I saw the images, and it’s funny because sometimes it can be interpreted but it was a joke between them,’ Mario said. ‘There is no problem between them.’
And Fernandes seemed to back up that version of events when he tweeted: ‘Oh Joao Mario, there you are ruining the headlines!’
Asked if the interview puts more pressure on the team ahead of the World Cup, Mario replied: ‘There’s not much to say about it. Ronaldo’s totally focused.’
