Several universities in the United Kingdom are said to be deregistering foreign students, including Nigerians, asking them to leave the country.

The president of the Nigerians in UK Community (NIUK), Benjamin Kuti, disclosed this in a post on X (Twitter), citing late repayments of tuition fees as the reason for the action.

The Nigerians in the UK Community (NIUK) is an organization dedicated to assisting Nigerians in relocating or visiting the country, ensuring they receive the necessary support for integration.

Kuti, also known as Oluomo of Derby, expressed concern about the situation, stating that so many universities have deregistered students in the UK and advised (them) to leave the country.

In response to inquiries, he explained that the deregistrations were linked to late repayments of tuition fees amid the new rules.

Some X users speculated that Nigerian students may be facing challenges with fee payments due to the foreign exchange scarcity crisis in Nigeria. The exchange rate and the unavailability of forex through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for tuition fees were cited as contributing factors.

Others suggested that students might be struggling to meet tuition payments due to limitations in work hours for part-time jobs.

The restrictions on working hours, combined with the need to repay tuition fees, were seen as potential obstacles for students.

Some users hinted at a possible connection to a new immigration law introduced by the UK government.

JJ. Omojuwa, a strategic communications expert, expressed concern about the fairness of the situation, particularly about the retrospective application of the immigration law.

He noted that the development might be related to the UK government’s measures to cut down on immigration, including the ban on overseas students, which could impact Nigerians, from bringing their families to the country.

This development raises concerns about the potential impact on foreign students, including Nigerians, studying in the UK and highlights the challenges they may face in light of tuition fee repayment issues and immigration regulations.
