The Benue State Internal Revenue Service, BIRS, task force on illegal checkpoints has arrested nine notorious suspects operating in the North Bank area of Makurdi, the state capital.
Chairman of BIRS, Mr. Emmanuel Agema, led the TaskForce Team which was inaugurated by Governor Hyacinth Aliai in September.
The Task Force team dismantled the checkpoint at the Area and arrested suspects handed over to the police to face the full wrath of the law.
Chairman of the Taskforce Team, CSP George Iorbee (rtd) in an interview with journalists said the team which comprises the police and Civil Defence Corps is aimed at eradicating illegal checkpoints and sanitizing the state of multiple extortion on motorists.
He noted that after making the first arrests of three hoodlums, the task force team met with much resistance on their way back and discovered that the Illegal checkpoints had already been remounted.
According to Mr Iorbee his team immediately retreated and reinforced with army officers who arrested six more of the hoodlums.
Some of the commuters along the route expressed satisfaction and appreciated the state government for the operation and appealed that the operation remain a routine to permanently send the illegal checkpoint operators into extinction
