Damian Lewis will leave Billions after five seasons, it’s been confirmed.
The Homeland star, 50, played Bobby Axelrod, also known as Axe, on the ShowTime and Sky Atlantic series since its inception in 2016.
The season five finale aired last night but followed with a trailer for season six, confirming its release on January 23.
Paul Giamatti, Corey Stoll and Maggie Siff will all be back, while Daniel Breaker (Girls5eva), who stars as Scooter, the chief of staff to Michael Prince (Stoll), has been promoted to series regular.
According to Showtime, after Axe lost all his companies to rival billionaire Michael, that’s the end of his time on the drama.
Speaking about the latest big twist, Lewis told New York Times: ‘There’s an opportunity maybe for me to return. But for now, broadly speaking, Axe has been vanquished.’
He added playing Axelrod was ‘easily the most time I’ve spent playing one character’, after bowing out of Homeland following three seasons of starring as Nicholas Brody.
Executive producer Brian Koppleman piled on the praise to Damian on Twitter, posting: ‘What an incredible joy to spend five years working so closely with the great @lewis_damian! @DavidLevien and I are beyond grateful to you, Damian, for the work, of course, and the fellowship, and for all you sacrificed to come do this with us.’
Lewis’ exit comes after the death of his wife and trail-blazing actress Helen McCrory, who died from cancer aged 52 earlier this year.
After pending six months at a time filming Billions, the father-of-two said he plans to stay at home with the teenage children they shared, after a ‘sadness in our family’.
Billions airs on Showtime in the US and is available to stream on NOW in the UK.
