The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has outlined how he would resolve the Biafra agitation by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, if elected president in 2023.
Atiku said he would negotiate with IPOB and other Biafra agitators in the Southeast.
Speaking during a Townhall meeting, Atiku said he would use restructuring to resolve some of the IPOB and Biafra agitators.
The former Vice President said the Southeast needs more autonomy.
“The IPOB issue in the South-East is basically, as far as my understanding is concerned, about the realisation of Biafra. Is it possible for Biafra to be realised today?
“How? By negotiations or by going through another civil war, which we can’t afford to?
“I believe we should be able to negotiate with the agitators from the South-East, as far as the issue of Biafra is concerned.
“That is why we proposed restructuring of the country, by which we mean devolution of more powers and resources,” he said.
Lately, IPOB under Nnamdi Kanu’s leadership has spearheaded the agitation for the restoration of Biafra.
Due to the group’s agitation, Kanu was arrested, detained, and is facing trial before the Nigerian court.
Despite a ruling by an Abuja Appeal Court, the Nigerian Government has turned down efforts to release the Biafra agitator.
