Emotions got the better of Josip Stanisic as Bayern Munich were denied a place in the Champions League semi-finals by Inter Milan, with the defender seen pushing a ballboy off a stool.
Trailing 2-1 from the quarter-final first leg, Harry Kane dragged Bayern level in the tie with an exquisite strike into the far corner to send the away end into raptures at the San Siro.
But a pair of quickfire goals from Lautaro Martinez and Benjamin Pavard swung the momentum back in Inter’s favour on the hour-mark – and the hosts clung on to advance through after Dier’s 76th-minute header.
The Serie A champions will do battle in the semi-finals with Barcelona, who survived an almighty scare against Borussia Dortmund to secure their place in the last four on Tuesday evening.
In tonight’s other quarter-final, Arsenal humbled Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, beating the holders 5-1 on aggregate, to set up a semi-final with Paris Saint-Germain.
There were increasing signs of frustration from Bayern after Inter’s spirited second-half fightback in Milan and Stanisic was perhaps fortunate only to have been shown a yellow card for shoving a ballboy.
The Croatian right-back seemingly believed the ballboy was time-wasting in order to aid the home team and the youngster was violently pushed off the back of the seat he was perched on by the touchline.
Many TV viewers felt Stanisic should have been given his marching orders by referee Slavko Vincic, but the 25-year-old remained on the field to see out the entire 90 minutes.
