Bayern Munich have no plans to sack Thomas Tuchel ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League showdown against Arsenal despite Saturday’s humiliating defeat against Heidenheim.
The former Chelsea manager surrendered the Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen last week after a demoralising home defeat against Borussia Dortmund.
Worse was to follow this afternoon, however, as the soon to be deposed champions threw away a 2-0 lead and in the process lost to a Bundesliga side enjoying their maiden top flight season for the first time in 24 years.
Tuchel announced his intention to leave Bayern at the end of the season over a month ago, but despite the increasingly desperate looking situation Bayern will not be making any rash decisions prior to their visit to north London.
Following their latest setback, Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl was asked whether the club is considering dismissing Tuchel immediately and replied: ‘No, I didn’t have that thought. It’s not always just a coaching problem.
Pressed as to whether Tuchel would sit on the bench against Arsenal, he added’100%’
Tuchel, himself, was at a loss to explain how his side let such a commanding lead slip and reserved particular criticism for Bayern’s increasingly porous defence.
He said: ‘This shouldn’t happen at this level. We had everything under control at halftime, it’s difficult to answer now.
‘We are struggling to maintain the level, unfortunately today was another proof. We gave the game away in the first 15 minutes of the second half, after we did a lot of good things in the first half.
‘We then had three or four big chances to score the third but didn’t take them. The way we conceded the goals was way too simple
Bayern legend Lothar Mathaus, meanwhile, was left dumbfounded after watching another capitulation and fears the writing is on the wall for Tuchel.
‘Last week’s disappointing performance against Dortmund and today’s result say a lot., he said.
‘Thomas Tuchel is no longer able to reach the team; he holds strange press conferences and makes strange statements.
‘I can imagine that Bayern will react in the next 24 to 48 hours, because this can’t go on. The team somehow needs a new impetus, and Thomas Tuchel can no longer provide that.’
