A 70-year-old man was on Saturday killed in a communal clash that occurred in Sang village of Bogoro Local Government Area of Bauchi State, over the coronation of a hamlet head.
Scores of people, including a 65-year-old, sustained various degrees of injury during the incident which happened around 7pm.
Also, 64 houses, three motorcycles and other belongings worth millions of naira were reportedly set ablaze.
The Bauchi State Police Command, in a statement on Sunday by its Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, confirmed the incident.
The statement was titled “CP orders for a full-scale investigation, cautions against any knee-jerk reactions to the disturbance of public peace in Bogoro.”
Wakil, a Superintendent of Police, said immediately after the command received information of the unrest, its operatives comprising Tactical teams, Rapid Response Squad and Operation Restore Peace, were deployed to the area to maintain law and order.
He said the state Commissioner of Police, Aminu Alhassan, has ordered an investigation to unravel the remote cause of the crisis.
The police spokesman said peace had returned to the area, adding that the CP had appealed for calm from residents of the area.
He said, “On April 15, 2023, around 7pm, the Bauchi State Police Command received a distress call over ongoing skirmishes in the Bogoro area of the state.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the communal clash in Sang village of Bogoro Local Government Area emanated from the coronation of the hamlet head of Sang.
“Some irate youths with different functions protested against the coronation. Consequently, this resulted in an attack on innocent citizens, as the irate youths set 64 houses, three motorcycles and belongings worth millions of naira ablaze.
“One person, Apollos Danlami, 70, was killed in the incident while a certain Naemiya Bature, 65, and some other people were injured in the fracas.”
Wakil said policemen were currently patrolling the affected area to ensure peace and order.
He added that efforts were ongoing to bring the perpetrators to book.
