Barcelona staged a boycott against Spanish broadcaster Movistar due to a comment made on-air towards Lamine Yamal during their Champions League win against Paris Saint-Germain.
The comment was made by former Atletico Madrid assistant, German Burgos, during the warm-up prior to Barca’s 3-2 victory in Paris on Wednesday evening.
As Yamal, a 16-year-old born in Barcelona to Moroccan and Equatorial Guinean parents, was shown doing keepy-ups on screen, one commentator said, ‘look at the quality, look at the touches’, to which Burgos replied, ‘if football doesn’t work out, he’ll end up at a traffic light’.
Burgos subsequently issued an apology on air for his comment towards the Barcelona winger.
‘It was a comment without trying to hurt anyone,’ Burgos said.
‘If anyone felt offended I apologise publicly. In these times we have to adapt to everything and that’s what we are in.’
However, both managers and players from Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain refused to answer questions from Movistar after the game.
Informing viewers of Barcelona’s decision to boycott all interviews, Movistar presenter Ricardo Sierra said: ‘I understand that many spectators expected us to have a conversation or interview with Barca.
‘But PSG and Barca have notified us that they were not going to attend to us because they were tremendously angry with a comment that was made on our set.’
