Barcelona have begun talks to sign Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, according to reports in Spain.

Greenwood has spent the season on loan at Getafe after United decided not to allow him to return to the first team last summer.

The 22-year-old has not played for United since his arrest in January 2022 for attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.

Greenwood had all charges against him dropped last February and United had considered reintegrating him back into Erik ten Hag’s squad before the club received major backlash from supporters over his return.

The forward has thrived during his loan spell at Getafe and according to Sport, this has alerted the interest of Barcelona ahead of the summer transfer window.

The report claims that Barcelona have made an initial approach to find out more information about Greenwood’s situation but have not yet committed to any formal negotiations with United.

Greenwood will have a year remaining on his contract with United this summer and Sport claim Barcelona consider the player a ‘low cost’ option in the upcoming transfer window.

However, United’s new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has refused to rule out the possibility of Greenwood’s return and has said a new decision will be made over the forward’s future at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Getafe’s president has said that Greenwood wants to remain with the Spanish club for another season.

‘He has a clear conscience, he is very comfortable and crazy about staying another year,’ said Getafe president Angel Torres.

‘It’s a matter that they [United] have to decide. There is new ownership. They have to decide.

‘In Spain he has a market but they [Barcelona] have money. Barca’s way of playing would suit him well but it depends on Manchester United. If it’s true, he’ll tell me.’
