Neymar was ‘crazy’ to return to Barcelona prior to the summer transfer window, according to Barcelona president Joan Laporta.

Despite the likes of Sergio Aguero and Memphis Depay arriving at the Nou Camp this summer, Barcelona endured a transfer window to forget as talisman Lionel Messi left the club for PSG.

The Catalan giants were hopeful of Messi signing a new deal at the end of last season but Financial Fair Play rules made it impossible.

But before the Messi drama it seems Barca were already planning their own Messi-Neymar reunion in La Liga with Laporta claiming the Brazilian was keen on rejoining.

‘We tried to sign Neymar,’ Laporta told TV3.

‘At that moment [after being elected in March], it seemed like an interesting signing. He got in contact. He was crazy about coming.

‘We interpreted fair play in another way at the time. If we had known all the rules [in LaLiga], we would not have made that offer.’

Barcelona cashed in on Neymar in 2017 in a record-breaking deal worth around £195m and ever since then he’s been linked with one day returning to Barca.

But the winger went on to sign a new long-term deal in May this year keeping him at the club until the summer of 2025.

With Kylian Mbappe failing to secure his move to Real Madrid this summer, PSG will be hoping their new frightening front three will finally be able to fire them to a maiden Champions League title.

And Messi’s close relationship with Neymar – the pair spent four trophy-laden seasons together at Barca – will be key to PSG’s success.

Speaking in December, Neymar declared his greatest desire was to line up alongside the six-time Ballon d’Or winner once again and his dreams have now come true.

‘What I want most of all is to play with Messi again, to be able to enjoy him once again on the pitch,’ Neymar said.

‘He can play in my place, I have no problem with that. But I want to play with him next year, for sure. We have to do it next season.’
