Veteran journalist, and newspaper columnist, Majeed Dahiru has come out to dispel notions that the incident of attack on President Muhammadu Buhari’s convoy by Kano residents during his just-concluded visit to the state, was sponsored by the opposition.
Recall that on Monday, January 30, 2023, reports filtered into the country’s media space indicating that angry residents in Kano took to the major roads to hurl stones at Buhari’s convoy while it was exiting the state. Videos also showing the moment the President’s helicopter was pelted with stones while taking off also went viral across social media platforms.
Reacting to the incident during a session of Africa Independent Television’s ‘Kaakaki’ program on Tuesday, Majeed dismissed claims that the people who were seen in the footage were sponsored by opposition parties who wanted to make the APC look bad ahead of the elections.
According to the veteran journalist, the angry reactions from the residents of the state toward the President were legitimate for several reasons.
He said; “If the people are not interested in humiliating their president in the manner that was done yesterday, nobody can mastermind it. The people of Kano, today, are buying petrol at an exorbitant rate that is injuring their economy.
“The people of Kano are not only queuing for petrol but are also queuing to collect their money from banks. They are also queuing to get PVCs. The people of Kano as also not immune to the comparative failure of leadership of the Buhari administration that is now manifesting not just in the form of an energy crisis but an emerging trend of currency crises. A Lebanon-like kind of currency crisis. What this means is that you have your own money but you can’t withdraw it from the bank because of some obnoxious policies, thoughtless, needless, and politically motivated policies.
“These are monetary policies that have gotten people fed up across the board. There were protests in Benin yesterday, and I think there are also planned protests across the cities of Nigeria.
So, what you saw in Kano was the rejection of a man they trusted so much. You need to know the sacrifice, the moral and material contribution of the people of Kano to Muhammadu Buhari’s presidential bid since 2003 and he is leaving them worse than he met them in 2015.”
