Manchester United have Bruno Fernandes available for today’s Premier League clash with Aston Villa but will make a late call over Kobbie Mainoo.
United skipper Fernandes was shown a straight red card for his challenge on James Maddison during Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham at Old Trafford.
That was set to rule him out of the trip to Villa Park and forthcoming games against Brentford and West Ham. But United’s successful appeal over a wrongful dismissal means he will be expected to start later today.
Mason Mount returned from a hamstring injury last week and came off the bench to replace Mainoo against Spurs.
The former Chelsea star was forced off in the second-half, however, after a clash of heads with Radu Dragusin and Erik ten Hag revealed he also picked up a separate injury issue.
Mount was not part of the squad that took on Porto on Thursday night and remains a doubt for this weekend.
Mainoo meanwhile did make the trip to Portugal but did not make the matchday squad. It is hoped he will be available against Villa.
‘We had three players with issues going into the game [against Porto],’ Ten Hag said ahead of the trip to Villa Park.
‘Harry Maguire, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo. Harry and Alejandro made the squad and were capable to play some minutes, whereas Mainoo didn’t make it. It was too big a risk.
‘We have to wait and see if he [Mainoo] can play on Sunday. If he is fit enough to start or be on the bench.’
Luke Shaw remains sidelined having not played for his club since February.
Ten Hag hopes to have him available after October’s international break but there is still no specific timeline in place for his return with long-term absentee Tyrell Malacia also still working his way back to full fitness.
Summer signing Leny Yoro also remains unavailable for the French sensation not expected to return until November at the earliest.
Marcus Rashford opened the scoring in Portugal but was hooked at half-time. Ten Hag confirmed post-match the change was made with rotation in mind rather than an injury, suggesting the England international will be in line to start today.
Predicted Man Utd XI to face Aston Villa
