Robert Pires says he is delighted with Arsenal’s new signings and progress under Mikel Arteta.

But the Gunners legend is not sure it will be enough to beat Manchester City to the Premier League title this season.
After narrowly losing out to City in the last campaign, Arteta has been backed with another huge summer spending spree in order to finally end Arsenal’s 19-year wait for a league title.
Over £200million has been splashed on Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber, with Arsenal set to kick-off the new season on Sunday with the Community Shield against the Citizens.
Many still have Pep Guardiola’s to win another title off the back of their incredible treble triumph, especially after signing Croatian duo Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol.
Nevertheless, Pires believes his former club are in a very good position to challenge for silverware again, telling talkSPORT: ‘I hope and I wish because they came very close to winning the title [last season].
‘I think Man City at the end were much better because they were like a machine and for Pep Guardiola he has two teams and that’s not the case for Arsenal.
‘But we’ve signed Rice, Havertz – I think these guys have good experience, play good football, they know the Premier League. So I think they can help Arsenal to try to win the trophy at the end of the season.
‘I’m very happy because they will play again in the Champions League, so yeah I think everything is okay.
‘I’ve talked with Mikel Arteta. He’s very happy and he’s very confident and I always believe a lot in Arsenal.’
Arteta naturally has played down what his expectations are for 2023/24 but says he knows what his side must do to win the Premier League: ‘If you want to challenge for the championship you know the total points you’re going to be needing and this is unheard of in this league for the last 100 years.
‘So that’s the standards and if you want to be there you know what you have to do, it’s very simple.’
