Jamie Carragher has hailed Emile Smith Rowe following his match-winning performance in Arsenal’s 3-1 Premier League win over Aston Villa.

Smith Rowe’s 23rd minute corner was met by the head of Thomas Partey to give Arsenal the lead against a below-par Villa side.

The 20-year-old then scored the Gunners’ third goal with a second-half strike that deflected off defender Tyrone Mings, before clipping the post and eventually creeping into the net.

Former Premier League defender Carragher believes the academy graduate will receive an England call-up sooner rather than later if he continues his current trajectory.

‘He will get England caps, absolutely no doubt. It’s a nice problem for Gareth Southgate to have with the abundance of young attacking players,’ he said.

‘There’s no doubt he’ll get England caps but he’ll have to bide his time, I love this lad, I always want him to do well. And to watch him with full flow with the ball at his feet.

‘He’s a special talent, he can pop up in different positions. If you’re a young attacking player, you have to have the ability to play in all of the front four positions now. And I think he can play all four and that’s a real bonus from him.’

Speaking earlier this week, Smith Rowe revealed that he wanted to stay at the north London club ‘forever’, while also setting some lofty career goals for himself.

‘Hopefully some trophies. I think that’s what it is about really, creating the memories,’ he said.

‘Definitely [winning] the Premier League would be great with Arsenal. Representing my country is definitely a dream as well, no matter what game.

‘Just putting on the shirt is going to be something I want to achieve in my career. I just want to be the best I can be. Hopefully I can look back and be proud of myself.

‘It’s always been a dream to put the England shirt on. For me, I have just got to focus on Arsenal and try to play as well as I can. We will see what happens.’
