Ray Parlour says he would be ‘amazed’ if Arsenal decide to hand Jack Wilshere a short-term contract after the midfielder was pictured back at the club’s training base this week.

The 29-year-old, a two-time FA Cup winner with the Gunners, has been a free agent since being released by Bournemouth at the end of last season and recently spent time with Serie B side Como FC in Italy with a view to building up his fitness.

Now Mikel Arteta has given Wilshere the chance to train at London Colney, with the injury-prone ex-England international working on his coaching badges while he searches for a new team.

There has been some talk of Wilshere rejoining Arsenal on a pay-as-you-play basis, but Parlour is confident Arteta is just doing his former team-mate a ‘massive favour’.

‘I’d be amazed if that happens,’ ex-Arsenal and England midfielder Parlour said on talkSPORT.

‘I think Mikel Arteta is doing him a massive favour at the moment and it’s down to Mikel Arteta to decide.

‘He’s helping him out for a new move. You can’t be competitive in training.

‘If he does look sharp then I’m sure Mikel Arteta might be phoning a few people. A Championship side might come in for him and maybe take him.

‘But it will be pay as you play, it’s got to be, because they’ve got to cover themselves as well. He can get injured, we knows he’s had his injury problems.

‘I hope he does come back. He’s only 29 and he’s still got a chance of making a difference for someone.’

Ray Parlour speaks on Arsenal pre-season tour

Parlour reckons re-signing Wilshere would create a ‘problem’ for the likes of Ainsley Maitland-Niles on the periphery of Arsenal’s squad.

‘I don’t think Arteta will be going down that road. What would people like Maitland-Niles think if Jack Wilshere starts getting games,’ he added.

‘He can play central midfield where Jack plays and suddenly Jack Wilshere comes in front of him, there might be a bit of a problem there.

‘I think Arsenal are just doing him a massive favour to get him fit and hopefully a club will come in for him.’

Aaron Ramsdale looks on during Arsenal's Premier League clash with Tottenham

Parlour has been impressed by Arsenal summer signing Aaron Ramsdale and believes there is a chance the goalkeeper could oust Jordan Pickford as England’s number one.

‘He’s got so much self-confidence. He had a really good game against Spurs and he’s started his career so well. Arsenal spent a lot of money on him but he looks a very confident lad,’ he said,.

‘And he knows that if he can keep playing well for Arsenal, he’s going to be right up there [for England contention].

‘Once he gets his opportunity for England, who knows?’

‘It was a lot of money (£24million) for what you were getting at that time, but they needed to address that position and that’s what they did.

‘They had him on their radar and have gone out and paid big money for him which you’ve got to do now.

‘Most clubs know exactly what position they are in. Arsenal probably paid over the odds a little bit but it seems like a good deal now.’

Parlour went on: ‘There must have been plans for him to be number one I should imagine.

‘They bided their time, got in probably quicker that what they thought, with Bernd Leno’s form, so he’s got his opportunity quicker.

‘Now they’ve got Ben White, Gabriel at centre-half, Kieran ‘Tierney at left-back and Tomiyasu.

‘They’ve got to stick with that back four now or back five. They look a lot better.’
