Ian Wright believes Eddie Nketiah has missed a golden opportunity to establish himself at Arsenal with the striker set to leave the club at the end of the season.

Like fellow striker Alexandre Lacazette, Nketiah has entered the final six months of his contract at the Emirates but will remain at the club until the end of the season with the Gunners light on options up front.

The 22-year-old has not started a Premier League game all season and turned in a disappointing performance as Arsenal crashed out of the FA Cup against Nottingham Forest at the start of the month.

With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joining Barcelona, Arsenal are in desperate need of someone to lead their attack.

But having been left underwhelmed with his performance against Forest, club legend Wright believes the striker is now looking towards the door.

‘Watching him against Forest, it was a tough game for us but what you do in those games is you keep it tight, you defend very well and you hope your guy takes a half chance and he didn’t take it,’ he told The Wrighty’s House.

‘Eddie is a goal scorer that should. Those are the chances and opportunities he should have taken that would have given him a berth in the team that will give him a chance to nick those goals.

‘But I don’t think he recognised the opportunity. Now, it looks like he wants to leave, and he probably will. And he has missed the chance. There was a chance there.’

Crystal Palace and Newcastle United were among the clubs interested in signing Nketiah during the January transfer window.
