Jorginho has revealed he helped convince his former Chelsea teammate Kai Havertz to join Arsenal this summer.

Havertz ended his three-year spell at Stamford Bridge by completing a surprise move to Arsenal last month in a deal worth £65m.

The German has signed a five-year contract at the Emirates Stadium and strengthens an Arsenal team that finished second in the Premier League last season and secured a return to the Champions League following a six-year absence.

Havertz was linked with a move abroad before Arsenal expressed interest in signing the 24-year-old and Jorginho was quick to contact his former teammate when he heard about the rumours.

Jorginho spent five years at Chelsea before joining Arsenal in January on a one-and-half-year contract. The Italian was linked with a move away from north London last month but has since dismissed the speculation.

Asked about Havertz’s arrival at Arsenal, Jorginho told The Arsenal Tour Diary: ‘It’s very nice.

‘When I heard there was a possibility, I called him straightaway. I said “is this true?” He said “yeah, it’s possible”. I was like, “you need to come!”

‘I just wanted the best for everyone… everyone wins. He wins because it’s a good project for him and it’s going to be amazing for the club and the team a well. So it was a win-win.’

Havertz was Mikel Arteta’s first signing of the summer but Arsenal have since announced deals for England midfielder Declan Rice and Netherlands defender Jurrien Timber.

Rice became Arsenal’s record signing when he completed a £105m move from West Ham last week.

The former Hammers captain said: ‘In football, amazing opportunities arise. Big clubs, like Arsenal, have come for me and it’s really hard to turn down.

‘You only ever get one career and I really believe in what Mikel is building here and the squad he’s building. I’m really looking forward to the future with Arsenal.

‘With Mikel and how he works, the squad, how young everyone is, the energy around the club and also the challenge of getting Arsenal back to where they belong, that means a lot to me.

‘I know the fans really want that. For me as a player, I’ve come here really hungry to have more success and to spend my best years at this great club.

‘I know he [Arteta] is going to get the best out of me. I know I’ve got more levels to go up in my game, and I feel like he’s the manager to take me to those next levels. I am really excited to be working with him.’

Arsenal challenged for their first Premier League title in almost 20 years last season but eventually finished second, five points behind Manchester City.
