Arsenal are looking to overhaul their midfield but have snubbed a recommendation to sign Tottenham-bound Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from one of their many departing scouts, according to reports.

Mikel Arteta is keen to sign significant reinforcements to bolster his midfield this summer, having long targeted Atletico Madrid star Thomas Partey in a £45million deal.

However, Arsenal’s recruitment drive has been overshadowed somewhat by the decision to make 55 staff members redundant, many of whom work in the scouting department – notably Francis Cagigao, who unearthed Cesc Fabregas and Hector Bellerin.

Arsenal chiefs Raul Sanllehi and Edu favour a more contact-led approach to transfers and have been looking to streamline the club’s enormous scouting network for some time.

Another high-profile casualty is UK scout Peter Clark, who, according to The Athletic, had proposed an alternative to Partey in the shape of Southampton star Hojbjerg.

Clark was very keen to sign the Denmark international, who skippered the Saints prior to making it clear he wanted a transfer this summer, but the club’s hierarchy ignored his recommendation.

Instead, Hojbjerg is set to undergo a medical with north London rivals Tottenham on Monday ahead of completing a transfer worth around £15million – a third of the price of Partey.

In a separate deal, Spurs are also selling Kyle Walker-Peters to Southampton for £12m, meaning Tottenham have only had to fork out £3m to land their top midfield target.

Arsenal will have to wait a little longer to reinforce their midfield, though, with any move for Partey having to wait until after the culmination of Atletico Madrid’s Champions League campaign.

According to The Athletic, a defensive midfielder is not the only player on the agenda, with Arteta also keen to sign a box-to-box midfielder and a No.10 to play behind the striker.

Mesut Ozil and Matteo Guendouzi will both need to be offloaded to fund those moves, while Arsenal are hoping to secure a second season-long loan for Dani Ceballos after his impressive performances under Arteta.
