Charlie Nicholas has slammed ‘joker’ Granit Xhaka – insisting he wishes he had left Arsenal this summer – and warned Mikel Arteta that he has lost the support of the club’s fans.

Switzerland international Xhaka was heavily linked with a move to Italian club Roma earlier in the summer but the move broke down and he ended up signing a contract extension at the Emirates.

Xhaka has endured a mixed spell in north London since signing from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016 and received a straight red card for a lunge on Joao Cancelo during Arsenal’s 5-0 defeat to Manchester City last weekend.

Arsenal legend Nicholas has slammed Xhaka after his latest mishap for the Gunners and says ‘he is the joker’ of the club.

Speaking on the Where’s Jeff podcast, Nicholas said: ‘He did what he’s always done. He played the joker card. He is the joker of our club.

‘How he can manipulate Roma into paying £17m… I would’ve personally dropped him off there… And then he signs a new contract.

‘When you look at the so-called captain in Xhaka, that’s a cop-out. It was an absolute camouflage [the red card] and it just sums everything up about that football club.

‘As much as I want to support Mikel Arteta, I’m finding is harder and harder to justify his choices.’

Arsenal’s defeat to Man City saw the Gunners slip to the bottom of the Premier League, with Arteta’s side suffering their worst-ever start to a domestic campaign.

The pressure is mounting on Arteta and Nicholas fears most Arsenal fans now want him replaced, although he believes he will be given a few more months to turn things around.

The former striker added: ‘I don’t think the crowd want him to stay. I think he’s got the right philosophy but if you don’t have the personnel…

‘Look, why would you sign Saliba and then send him out on loan when you have awful defenders at the club?

‘I think the fans already want him out. I think they will give him until Christmas but I think the fans have made up their mind.’
