Arsenal and Liverpool are both ‘exploring’ the possibility of signing Kylian Mbappe on a free transfer in the summer when his Paris Saint-Germain contract expires, according to reports.

The 24-year-old’s current deal at PSG comes to an end in the summer of 2024, meaning he is able to start negotiating with other clubs from 1 January.

The French club are still hoping that Mbappe will still on beyond this season, but there is interest in him from the Premier League, and from long-term suitors Real Madrid.

The prolific striker has come close to signing for Real Madrid on more than one occasion and the Santiago Bernabeu remains the most likely destination for him when he leaves PSG, but nothing has been agreed.

The Daily Record reports that both Arsenal and Liverpool are trying to work out whether they are able to tempt Mbappe to the Premier League, ‘exploring the financial and sporting parameters involved’ in signing the France forward.

While he is currently set to be available on a free transfer, any deal to bring in Mbappe will be extremely expensive and likely blow any wage structure at Arsenal or Liverpool apart.

However, he is undoubtedly one of the world’s best players and any club capable of signing him will have to seriously consider it after his 228 goals in 276 games for his current club.

Mbappe has also been integral for France in winning the 2018 World Cup and finishing runners-up in Qatar last winter, scoring 46 times in just 75 caps for his country.

Whether any side can beat Real Madrid to Mbappe still seems unlikely, especially as he is reportedly keen to make a move that gives him the best chance of winning the Champions League and the Ballon d’Or.

Real Madrid’s immense record in Europe’s top competition and producing Ballon d’Or winners will be a compelling argument for the Frenchman if he wants to fulfil those goals.
