The dice is cast as the All Progressives Congress APC faces the task of picking its Presidential candidate for the 2023 Presidential election.

Up to yesterday’s evening six serious candidates; Lawan, Osinbajo , Tinubu, Amaechi,  Onu and Umahi are battle ready to face the ballot.

The newspot reliably gathered that the inner caucus of the party has been tinkering with many options that would lead to the emergence of its flag bearer.

The first option which has been abandoned,  according to a reliable source, was to convince the former President Goodluck Jonathan to signal his intention to contest. He agreed to join on the condition he would not face the primary contest. Jonathan was initially promised to be the consensus candidate but the idea was jettisoned as soon as other candidates strongly opposed the plan . Two of the candidates were said to have warned Mr President that if the party decided to settle for consensus candidate it would signal death knell for the party.

The caucus it was learnt quickly abandoned the consensus option and Jonathan beat a quick retreat. The decision to drop consensus candidate was really affirmed by the Chairman of the party Senator Abdullahi Adamu when asked if a consensus arrangement would be adopted for the presidential race as was done when he emerged the chairman of the party said: “There is no truth in what you said. Reason is that the chairmanship seat is not the same as that of the tussle for the presidency of the country.

“You can’t even compare the two of them; that question does not arise. However, the party has laid down its rules and regulations for aspirants. We would scrutinise all of them based on our guidelines to be sure we pick the right candidate for the party.”

Adamu also dismissed the insinuations that the high number of aspirants, the first in the history of the country, was  aimed at extending Buhari tenure, saying:  “I can only say God will deal with those behind such insinuations.

The party is now faced with the second option of throwing open the contest for the six aspirants.  The newspot gathered that the caucus is planning to swing the party choice to a candidate known for his loyalty, integrity and humility.  Not only that the candidate must be a cerebral and physically fit for the exalted position.

Chairman Adamu also warned aspirants  against aspirants sharing money  saying they cannot be the right choice of the party and do not even mean well for the country.
