Former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte is open to a return to the Premier League but is only willing to join a club with a ‘winning project’, according to reports.

The Italian coach left San Siro over the summer shortly after winning the Serie A title having become disillusioned by the club’s direction, with Inter forced to sell star players Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi.

He held talks with Tottenham over a potential move to north London, though was not convinced by their short-term trophy prospects, and opted to bide his time for a big job to become available.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Conte could well have his pick of jobs this season, with the 52-year-old already being put forward as a potential replacement for the likes of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Mikel Arteta at Manchester United and Arsenal respectively.

The Gunners lost their opening three Premier League matches, though bounced back against Norwich, while Solskjaer was branded ‘utterly clueless’ by Jason Cundy after United’s Champions League defeat to Young Boys and Conte was put forward as a potential replacement.

Conte is comfortably the most experienced and proven manager who is currently available should those clubs lose faith in their managers, though Sky Sport Italia’s Gianluca DiMarzio says there is only one Premier League side he would entertain an approach from.

Despite the links with Arsenal, Conte would not consider the Gunners because he wants to join a club where he can win titles immediately.

He views Arsenal as more of a long-term project which lacks the players required to compete for silverware immediately, which is much the same reason why he rejected north London rivals Tottenham.

United are a different proposition, however, and are the one Premier League club Conte would consider joining if an offer ever materialised.

The squad is packed full of proven winners – particularly with Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane joining in the summer transfer window – while they have players that would easily fit into his usual 3-5-2 formation.

However, right now there has been zero contact between United and Conte nor is there likely to be anytime soon despite the disappointing performance against Young Boys, with the Red Devils’ hierarchy still having total faith in Solskjaer.
