Anthony Martial reveals he got his No.9 shirt back from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the condition he proved he was worthy of the number in every Manchester United game.

The Frenchman has enjoyed a superb return to form this season and is enjoying his best ever campaign for the Red Devils, scoring 21 goals in all competitions.

Martial had the No.9 shirt taken off him when Zlatan Ibrahimovic arrived at Old Trafford and continued to play with the No.11 under Jose Mourinho.

Solskjaer handed the frontman number back to Martial last summer and the 24-year-old revealed the gesture came with one condition.

Martial told Canal Plus: ‘He [Solskjaer] sent me a message, he said “do you want to take your No.9 shirt back?”

‘I straight up said yes! I said yes and he told me now it’s up to you to show me [that you deserve it] every time you’re on the pitch.’

Solskjaer has been full of praise for Martial this season and suggested his superb form was based on a tweak to his game.

‘He’s definitely developing, improving and he’s enjoying his football,’ Solskjaer said this week.

‘He’s stepped it up this season, I feel, both as an individual and more so as a team player, and physically.

‘I remember there were talks about our forwards last season being the least active and there were some stats flying around but Anthony is now working really hard for the team and he is a quality, quality finisher.’

After a goal in the 2-2 draw against Southampton, United fans will be hoping Martial continues to perform in the match against Crystal Palace on Thursday night.

United cannot afford any more slip-ups as they are level on points with Leicester City, but sitting in fifth place due to goal difference.

Chelsea moved four points ahead of Untied and Leicester City thanks to their win against Norwich, but the Blues have played a game more.
