Anthony Gordon has missed Newcastle United’s final Premier League game of the season against Brentford due to injury.

The 23-year-old scored his 11th Premier League goal of the season in Newcastle’s 3-2 defeat away to Manchester United on Wednesday evening.

But Gordon suffered an ankle injury following a challenge from Sofyan Amrabat, although Newcastle were denied a penalty despite there being clear contact inside United’s box.

Speaking after Newcastle’s defeat, Gordon said of his injury: ‘Really sore. I’m not too sure how good my ankle will be.’

Asked he would be available for England’s Euro 2024 campaign if selected, Gordon said: ‘Listen, no matter how the ankle is my aim will be to be there. A sore ankle won’t get in the way of that, don’t worry.’

And for Newcastle’s trip to Brentford on Sunday, Gordon was not part of the travelling squad.

Eddie Howe has four changes from Newcastle’s defeat against Manchester United, with Harvey Barnes replacing Gordon.

Nick Pope replaces Martin Dubravka in goal to make his first start since December.

Fabian Schar returns in defence with Kieran Trippier making way, while Joelinton starts ahead of Elliot Anderson in midfield.

Callum Wilson returns from illness and is named as a substitute.

Newcastle currently sit seventh in the Premier League and could go sixth if they beat Brentford and Chelsea lose at home to Bournemouth.
