Ange Postecoglou says Tottenham Hotspur need to sign a centre-back as they continue to struggle with injuries in the position.

With Micky van de Ven and Eric Dier out injured, the lack of depth in the Spurs squad has been exposed, with full-back Ben Davies having to fill in alongside Cristian Romero in the middle of defence.

The Tottenham manager is full of praise for the Welshman and how he has performed at centre-back but accepts that it is not his natural position.

With the January transfer window round the corner, the Australian says Spurs need to bring someone else in at centre-back as any more injuries would leave them in serious trouble.

‘He’s getting a run of games now but we’ve always got to be mindful he is not a centre-back,’ Postecoglou told a press conference.

‘We’re trying to manufacture something there but he has grown into that role. I thought it was important last week because [Newcastle] are still a big threat and we had to be really disciplined and I thought we showed that.

‘Apart from the goal, which got a bit sloppy towards the end, the rest of the game I thought we were pretty good.

‘Ben’s still adapting to it. He’s done remarkably well. Centre-back is still a position where, especially in our structure, it is one of the few positions where you need guys with outstanding attributes in there.

‘We’ve been very fortunate that he’s been able to fill in for us there. He’s really good at taking in information, he really understands the game, not just his own role but how we want to play and that’s helped him.

‘Ultimately, we still need to sign another centre-back because at the moment we are a little bit on tenterhooks because if something happens again we are short and we are already short.’

Tottenham’s current injuries at centre-back are not about to ease immediately, although Dier is expected to return from a groin problem by the end of the month.

Van de Ven is not as close to recovery from his hamstring issue, but is likely to be back in action in January.
