Andy Murray has crashed out of the French Open at the first round stage following a straight sets defeat to Stan Wawrinka.

Competing at Roland Garros for just the second time since 2017, the Briton was swept aside by Wawrinka who cruised to a 6-4 6-4 6-2 win on Sunday night.

Murray had initially expected to miss the tournament having suffered an ankle ligament injury in March but recovered in time to have his chance to say farewell to the French Open.

The 37-year-old has already indicated 2024 may be his last year in tennis and waved goodbye to the crowd as he left Court Philippe-Chatrier.

While his singles campaign in Paris is over, Murray will still compete in doubles action alongside Dan Evans.

Murray and Wawrinka have shared 22 battles over the years with the Swiss spurning the former world no1 on French soil once again.

Murray was eliminated at the first round stage in 2020 having lost in the semi-finals in 2017 – losing to Wawrinka on both occasions.

‘My first words were respect for a great champion,’ Wawrinka told Eurosport.

‘I have loved watching him [Andy Murray] play, loved fighting against him. We’ve had a lot of fights over the last 15 years.

‘We are not very young so we did all we could and remember all these moments.

‘I love to work in front of a crowd like this. I’ve shared a lot of emotion with this crowd and they gave me a lot of energy to fight.

‘In my head I’m still a young guy, still a kid.’
