British legend Andy Murray has admitted that he is just one ‘big injury’ away from making his official retirement from tennis.

The 35-year-old plays with a metal hip and had been on a resurgence from injury in the first half of 2022 – reaching two ATP Tour finals in January and June respectively and earning a spot back inside the world top 50.

But after crashing out of Wimbledon in the second round at this year’s Championships, three-time Grand Slam champion Murray saw his form dip.

Murray admitted in November that he had not been working hard enough in the second half of 2022 and was not spending enough time in the gym.

Ahead of the new 2023 season, with the Australian Open less than a month away, Murray has been speaking about his future in the sport and admitted that his time is nearly up.

‘If my body is in good shape and I’m still able to compete consistently, I’ll keep playing,’ former world No.1 Murray, now ranked world No.49, told Sky Sports.

‘But I can’t look so far in advance with the age I’m at and with the issues I’ve had. If I was to have a big injury, I probably wouldn’t try to come back from that.’

It is not the first time Murray has hinted at retirement this year after he also dropped a big hint in July.

‘You never know how close you are to the end but I’m aware I’m getting towards the end of my career,’ the two-time Wimbledon champion said at the Hall of Fame Open in Rhode Island.

‘So I want to make the most of every match in every tournament I get to play.’

Murray is open to the idea of one day coaching British compatriot Emma Raducanu, who has recently teamed up with German Sebastian Sachs.
