The Cameroonian is set to touch down in Manchester tonight ahead of a medical with the club on Wednesday.
United have agreed a £43.9m deal with Inter Milan for the former Ajax and Barcelona goalkeeper.
Onana will become United’s second signing of the summer following the £55m acquisition of Mason Mount from Chelsea.
The goalkeeper’s arrival will take United’s spending to £100m this summer, meaning Erik ten Hag will have just £20m left to sign a striker.
After pulling out of the race to sign Harry Kane as the England skipper was deemed too expensive, United identified Atalanta ace Hojlund as their first choice.
The 20-year-old – a boyhood United fan – has already agreed personal terms with United but Atalanta want an excessive £86m to part with the Denmark international.
United will not pay that much for the Dane but they will sanction departures in order to raise funds to bid for Hojlund, as Ten Hag considers him a vital next move in his Old Trafford overhaul.
And it’s clear that the club’s interest in Hojlund has got Onana’s approval – judging from his recent social media activity.
The Cameroonian ‘liked’ a post that claimed United will now submit a bid for Hojlund after agreeing personal terms with the striker.
Onana will sign in time to form part of United’s pre-season tour of the United States, and Ten Hag demanded the club completed the move in time for the Cameroonian to settle in.
A move for Hojlund is likely to be far more protracted as Atalanta have turned down suggestions from United that players could move in the opposite direction to bring down the club’s asking price.
United are reportedly willing to offer the likes of Donny van de Beek, Mason Greenwood and Amad Diallo on loan in order to bring down Atalanta’s asking price.
But the Italians want a straight fee for Hojlund, and feel under little pressure to sale.
