In a dramatic turn of events, an American Airlines flight traveling from New York to New Delhi was diverted to Rome on Sunday for unspecified security reasons. Flight AA292, which took off from John F. Kennedy International Airport, was redirected to Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport after the airline received alerts regarding a potential security issue.
According to a statement from American Airlines, the safety and security of passengers remain their top priority. The airline confirmed that they are cooperating closely with law enforcement agencies in response to the situation. The flight made the diversion request around 2 p.m. local time, while it was still over the Caspian Sea, approximately three hours away from Rome.
Roberto Rao, a spokesperson for Rome’s airport, noted that the situation was treated with seriousness, although it did not appear to be an immediate threat. Upon entering Italian airspace, the aircraft was escorted by two Italian air force fighter jets, ensuring a secure landing.
Upon arrival, the 199 passengers disembarked safely and were met by local law enforcement, who conducted thorough inspections of the aircraft and its luggage. The passengers were given accommodations for the night in Rome, with plans to continue their journey to New Delhi the following day, contingent upon the results of the inspections.
Airport operations at Leonardo da Vinci International Airport remained unaffected by the incident, allowing for a smooth continuation of other flights. Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration has not yet issued any comments regarding the diversion.
As the investigation continues, American Airlines is expected to provide further details about the security concern that prompted this significant detour.
