A member of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Mr Anthony Sani has asked Igbo elders to allow Nnamdi Kanu follow the due process of the law in his quest to attain freedom and not go begging for his unconditional release.

Sani claims he is at a loss as to the aim of Igbo leaders who are asking President Buhari to release Kanu unconditionally considering the charges which the state has brought against him and IPOB.

He said allowing Kanu go through the due process will improve Nigeria’s democracy

“We are operating a democracy which is the rule of law. One would think allowing Mr Kanu to go through the legal processes would improve the tenets of our nascent democracy and peaceful coexistence.”

He added that in trying Kanu, Nigerians would know if secession is an offence against the state or not, adding that to release Mr Kanu unconditionally without testing the legal system, may not serve the country’s democracy any good.

He said if after going through the due processes of law and Kanu is found guilty, the government is at liberty to release him unconditionally either on compassionate grounds or for political expediency, assuring that the approach may serve a greater good.

The elder statesman explained that if he Nnamdi Kanu is released now unconditionally as being requested by the Igbo leaders, it may convey an impression that Danegeld’s theory of rewarding bad behaviour is being encouraged by both the Igbo leaders and the government.

He said he would prefer Kanu to go through all the processes before any consideration for release, stressing that if the due processes do not find him guilty and set him free of the charges, it would still be good for the democracy.

I will consider releasing Nnamdi Kanu – Buhari to Southeast leaders
