Alexandre Lacazette is expected to be fit for Lyon’s trip to PSG on Sunday after a scary collision during the win over Brest on Sunday which saw him stretchered off the pitch.

It was a dramatic contest which saw Lyon take the lead, fall 3-1 behind and then get themselves level again at 3-3 at the 90-minute mark, with Lacazette scoring their second.

Deep into stoppage time the former Arsenal striker looked to get on the end of a chipped ball into the box and Brest goalkeeper Marco Bizot came flying out at him.

Bizot didn’t get the ball and a high knee clattered into Lacazette, leaving the 32-year-old laid out on the turf.

The France international, who has scored 15 Ligue 1 goals so far this season, would have normally taken the resulting spot-kick, but he instead was stretchered off the field in serious discomfort.

In his absence it was another former Arsenal man, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who scored the penalty and secured Lyon a 4-3 win.

There was concern over Lacazette after the match, but RMC Sport report on Monday that medical tests have shown there is no serious damage and he is expected to be involved against PSG at the weekend.

Maitland-Niles said after the dramatic win: ‘It was sad to see him stretchered off tonight and so I knew I had to score that penalty, especially for him.’

Lacazette has been prolific since returning to Lyon from Arsenal in 2022, scoring 27 league goals in his first season back at the club and continuing his impressive form this campaign.

It was a bold move for Maitland-Niles to take the crucial penalty as he had not scored in Ligue 1 before Sunday, in 17 previous appearances.

The Englishman has credited manager Pierre Sage, who took over from Fabio Grosso in November, for helping him rediscover his passion for the game.

‘Since the manager arrived, I’m happy playing football again and get up in the morning thinking, “Cool, I have training”,’ Maitland-Niles told L’Equipe.
