England football hero Paul Gascoigne says he would ‘love’ Sir Alex Ferguson to return to Manchester United for ‘one more season’.

Fergie established himself as one of the greatest managers of all time during his remarkable 27-year spell at Old Trafford.

Under Ferguson, who turns 83 in December, United won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups and two Champions Leagues.

Manchester United have suffered an alarming fall from grace since Ferguson retired in 2013 and currently find themselves just 14th in the Premier League under struggling boss Erik ten Hag.

The Old Trafford owners considered sacking Ten Hag over the summer and their decision to stick with the Dutchman looks questionable as United – the most successful team in Premier League history and a global powerhouse – sit just five points above the relegation zone.

While Manchester United are showing faith and patience with Ten Hag, they have also reportedly begun lining up his possible replacement, with ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel and current assistant manager Ruud Van Nistelrooy believed to be in the frame.

But Gascoigne wants United to bring back Fergie for ‘one more season’ and says he would be intrigued to see what the legendary Scot could do with a struggling team.

Asked whether he can see Ten Hag surviving until Christmas, Gascoigne told SportsCasting: ‘It’s like me as a player, I knew I was good. And it doesn’t matter who I was up against, or replacing, for instance, no problem.

‘To follow Alex Ferguson, a few of them, even Jose Mourinho didn’t last long, David Moyes not for long.

‘Looking at Ten Hag, I feel sorry for him a bit. I would love Alex Ferguson to take over just for one season and just see what he could do with those players because I think some of them take the p*** out of Ten Hag.

‘You’ve got to give the man a bit of respect and it’s such a massive club, I don’t think some of the players realise who they’re playing for.’

While Gascoigne believes Manchester United should consider rehiring Ferguson, he ‘can see’ ex-England manager Gareth Southgate getting the Old Trafford gig.

Southgate, who stepped down as England manager following the Euro 2024 final defeat, was heavily linked with the Red Devils earlier in the year in the aftermath of the club’s takeover.

‘If United do get rid of [Erik] ten Hag, I could see Gareth taking over as manager,’ added Gascoigne, who earned 57 caps for England while playing for the likes of Tottenham and Newcastle.

‘I always say once you’re England manager, you’ll get a job for life.’

Southgate was said to be ‘open’ to taking over at Old Trafford once he relinquished control of the England team but confirmed last week he would not be returning to football management ‘in the next year’.

‘I won’t coach in the next year, for sure,’ Southgate said at the ECA Europe general assembly. ‘I’m certain of that.

‘I need to give myself time to make good decisions. When you come out of a really big role you need to give your body time, you need to give your mind time.’

Manchester United, who have eight points after seven games, return to Premier League action on Saturday against Brentford.
