Akwa Ibom: I regret living criminal lifestyle – Released armed robber

A repentant armed robber, Udo-Etuk Effiong Utuk of Oku Iboko, Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has expressed regrets over his nefarious and criminal lifestyle which led to his incarceration in the Uyo correctional centre for about five years.

Utuk who was convicted for robbery said this shortly after he was released from lawful custody after serving his jail term in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital.

In a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of state Correctional Service, DSC. Ogbajie Ogbajie, said the released inmate advised young people to avoid unwholesome behaviours that could bring them into Correctional Centers.

Speaking before the release of the ex-offender, the officer-in-charge of Uyo Correctional Center, Assistant Controller of Corrections, ACC Julius Ogueri described Uduk as an ’embodiment of the Correctional Service’ adding that he has shown enough remorse and presented himself for rehabilitation within the number of years he spent in custody.

He noted that Uduk who has never gone to school was able to acquire his first leaving certificate while in custody as well as a trade-test certificate saying that rehabilitation tools such as a wheelbarrow, shovel and cutlass were given to him to help him in his agricultural enterprise which he has indicated an interest in.

According to him, ‘due to a paradigm shift, the Nigerian Correctional Service has placed more emphasis on reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders back to the society as productive citizens.


 “The ex-offender came into custody as a novice with no prior academic record or skill but today, he is going out with a First School Leaving and Trade-test Certificate which he acquired while in custody and he said he will start his own plantain plantation in his community.”

The ACC said he is very impressed at the level of change; academically, skillfully, morally, spiritually and otherwise in the life of Uduk, hence he was moved passionately to contribute a token to assist and support him to start a new life since he has a passion for farming and also promised to follow-up the discharged inmate to make sure that he lives up to expectation.

Uduk on his part appreciated ACC Ogueri, officers and men of the Nigerian Correctional Service for assisting him through counselling and skill acquisition programs which enabled him get reformed, rehabilitated and reintegrated back into society a better person.
