Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has urged the people of Eastern Obolo Local Government not to be unnecessarily apprehensive over the remapping of the State.

The legislators reassured that no local government council will be shortchanged in the proposed remapping of the state.

It could be recalled that the House of Assembly had in a resolution mandated the state Surveyor General to produce a ‘generally acceptable, approved and gazetted map for the state.’

However, the people of Eastern Obollo had claimed that the proposed remapping would cede about 17 local communities and rob them of their status as a local government.

The Secretary General of Ilima, a socio-cultural organisation of the people, Dr Amah William at a media briefing said, ” By this purported alterations and adjustment of the original map of Akwa Ibom State, Onna, Mkpat Enin, Ikot Abasi LGAs will now become a littoral local with unfettered access to the Atlantic ocean, a vain imagination that will never come to pass as the Lord Almighty liveth.”

Speaking on Tuesday in Uyo, the state capital, the chairman House Committee on Information, Hon Aniefiok Denis, member representing Etinan state constituency promised that the house would ensure equity in the exercise.

He explained that the proposed remapping was borne out of concerns and grievances from the people of the state, adding that the house decided to look into the issue to ensure peace at the end of the exercise.

He advised the people to liaise with the member representing them at the Assembly, the Surveyor General and ensure that the proper thing is done.

He said, “There’s no need to be unnecessarily apprehensive. We are sure that the relevant government agencies, persons, bodies and/or commissions will be thorough in carrying out their constitutional duties(Mapping)by ensuring that no group, village or local government area is shortchanged or robbed. We will make sure we see what has been delineated.”
