A group, Akure Youth Coalition, has kicked against the state government’s creation of Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), alleging that the Akure South and Akure North local governments were shortchanged in the process.
They called for a review of the decision.
They described the allocation of the LCDAs as unjust and unfair, arguing that Akure City, which currently comprises Akure South and Akure North deserved more than the four LCDAs that were allocated.
The proposed creation of 33 LCDAs across the state had sparked widespread concerns and protests, cutting across the three senatorial districts.
Many individuals and groups have voiced their discontent, alleging that the distribution of LCDAs is politically motivated.
In a statement issued in Akure, the state capital, the youths emphasized that Akure South Local Council, being the capital, deserved more than the three LCDAs it was allocated to it.
The statement signed by the president of the coalition, Oluwatuyi Adekambi; the General Secretary, Michael Adeyeye; and the group’s National organising Secretary, Tayo Oluyi, pointed out that the decision fails to take into account the population density, land mass, and infrastructure of Akure.
Similarly, they expressed disappointment that Akure North Local Government was only given one LCDA, which they believe was grossly inadequate.
“The map of the State has been balkanized to cede various parts of Akure to other communities, and this will not be accepted.
“Akure, the State capital, should therefore be granted a Special Status and given the number of LCDAs as recommended to the government committee by the community.
“It is therefore imperative that we urge the government that the relative peace of Akure, the state capital, should not be threatened in any way, as this exercise, as it currently is, is capable of creating restiveness in the system,” the statement read.
