Well, who else is a blubbering mess after listening to Adele’s Easy On Me this morning?

The 33-year-old has released her first song in five years and it’s classic Adele, in that there’s soulful, soaring vocals, delicate piano, and our mascara is already ruined by 8am.

However, don’t expect to come out of this song hating your ex, because Adele has bared her soul on Easy On Me, the first song from her upcoming album 30, by mining her divorce from Simon Konecki for inspiration.

In an interview with British Vogue, the star said that she wrote Easy On Me for her nine-year-old son Angelo, who had questions for his parents after their split, like ‘why can’t you still live together?’

Adele said: ‘I just felt like I wanted to explain to him, through this record, when he’s in his twenties or thirties, who I am and why I voluntarily chose to dismantle his entire life in the pursuit of my own happiness. It made him really unhappy sometimes. And that’s a real wound for me that I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to heal.’

She seems to address Angelo on the chorus, as she sings: ‘Go easy on me baby/ I was still a child/ Didn’t get the chance to feel the world around me/ I had no time to choose what I chose to do.’

Adele later pleads for him to understand that she had ‘good intentions’, even if that isn’t clear right now.

The verses’ lyrics then describe the pain of the divorce, as on verse one Adele sings: ‘I know there is hope in these waters/ But I can’t bring myself to swim when I am drowning in this silence.’

On the second verse, Adele seems to specifically address one of the reasons that led to her divorce, singing: ‘There ain’t no room for things to change when we are both so deeply stuck in our ways/ You can’t deny how hard I have tried/ I changed who I was to put you both first but now I give up.’

Adele and Simon, 47, started dating in 2011 and welcomed their son the following year, and it was originally believed that they tied the knot in 2016, with Adele referring to the charity executive as her ‘husband’ at awards ceremonies the following year.

However, she has recently revealed that they didn’t marry until 2018, and had split up by 2019.

Adele told British Vogue: ‘We got married when I was 30… and then I left’, adding: ‘This is very embarrassing. It wasn’t very long.’

The exes, who still live across the road from each other to co-parent Angelo, finalised their divorce earlier this year.

Adele is now dating sports agent Rich Paul.

30 is out November 19. Easy On Me is out now.
