More Abia State indigenes have continued to express their sympathy over the death of the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate, Prof. Uche Eleazar Ikonne. The PDP governorship flagbearer died on Wednesday.
They include the three Abia senators; the former Governor of Abia State and Chief Whip of the Senate, Dr. Orji Kalu (Abia North), T. A. Orji (Abia Central) and Enyi Abaribe (Abia South).
Others are an industrialist, Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, Prof. Onyemachi Maxwell Ogbulu (Vice Chancellor, Abia State University, Uturu) among others.
Kalu described Ikonne as “an accomplished professional in his field”, stating that “The late academician lived a fulfilled life considering his achievements and contributions to humanity”.
On his part, Orji described the late Ikonne as “a dear friend, brother, fine gentleman and a huge asset of immense worth to the entire PDP family and especially Abia Central Senatorial District which has been worst hit by his passage” adding that Ikonne’s departure, “is a bitter pill to swallow”.
Meanwhile, Abaribe, suspended his campaign for three days in honour of the late former Abia State University vice-chancellor.
In a statement by his Media Adviser, Uchenna Awom, Abaribe said “irrespective of political party differences, he must honour the dead who is an illustrious son of Abia State, an erudite scholar and of course his friend”.
“I’m pained and devastated over this development. We belong to different political parties, but he was my friend and brother. It’s very unfortunate and disheartening that he has to die now in the middle of the campaign
“It’s a great loss and one that has put our people in a very difficult political situation. Death is inevitable. God knows the best. Adieu Prof.,” he said.
On his part, Ohuabunwa said, “the news of the lamentable demise of Prof. Ikonne I must say is the most startling welcome I have received in my life.
“I remember seeing him last October during the birthday of governor Ikpeazu he was full of life and brimming with smiles, that was why his ill health came to me as a surprise.
“We have been praying and wishing for him to get back on his feet but it pleases the Lord to call him home.
“Abia has lost a scholar, technocrat and one of its finest in Prof. Ikonne . It is too sad you couldn’t live to actualise your dream and vision for Abia through your TIGER Agenda.”
