The Abia State Police Command has officially established the Police Complaints Response Unit (CRU) in the state.
This is in line with the directive from the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
In a press release issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, acting on behalf of the Abia State Commissioner of Police, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, it was stated that this specialized unit within the Nigerian Police Force is dedicated to addressing complaints and reports of police misconduct.
Its goal is to ensure accountability and transparency in the actions of police officers while fostering a positive relationship between the police and the public in the state.
The release provided guidance to residents of Abia State on steps to take in case of encountering police brutality or any form of misconduct from police officers. It emphasized the importance of remaining calm and composed during any encounter with the police, avoiding aggressive reactions that could escalate the situation.
Residents were encouraged to document incidents by discreetly recording them using their smartphones or other recording devices, capturing both audio and video evidence to support their complaint.
“If there are witnesses present, collect their contact information. Witnesses can provide valuable testimony in support of your complaint,” the statement said.
To report an incident, the release directed individuals to contact the Police Complaints Response Unit (CRU) through various channels, including calls and WhatsApp at 09031593827, email at [email protected], Twitter handle @CRU_Abia_Police, Facebook Page: Complaint Response Abia State Command, and PRO Office line at 09167783577.
