Following the alarm raised by the Abia State House of Assembly, concerning untidy conditions of local government secretariats in the State, officials of most of the affected councils have cleaned up their previously dirty headquarters.

The Assembly, last week, passed a resolution directing the Heads of Service of the councils to clear the towering grasses overgrown in their premises within one week.

The State’s House of Assembly Speaker, Emmanuel Emeruwa and his colleagues, while taking a stand on the matter brought by the Deputy Speaker, Austin Meregini, said the situation was unacceptable to the lawmakers.

A trip by Newspot to Umuahia North local government and some other council headquarters in the state on Monday showed that the council secretariats have been cleared of the overgrown bushes.

Also, refuse heaps in the council secretariats were observed to have been cleared to give the working staff a fresh breath of air.

A staff of Umuahia North LGA, who spoke under anonymity, praised the members of the Abia State House of Assembly for taking the stand.

The Umuahia North worker said the current outlook of the LGA was more habitable than in the recent past.

Newspot recalls that the Deputy Speaker of House State House of Assembly, Austin Meregini while moving a matter of urgent public importance, said there was a need to “prevent looming danger within the various local governments and their surroundings”.

Meregini had also cautioned that the untidy outlook of the councils may attract embarrassment to the Abia State government.
